Last week was the Symposium cheat sheet. This week I said I’d get hands-on with the Sitecore Marketer MCP, so here we go.
If you haven’t run into MCP yet: the Model Context Protocol is an open standard that lets AI clients (Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Copilot Studio…) call tools exposed by a server. Sitecore now runs one of those servers for SitecoreAI. Connect your client, sign in, and the AI can list sites, read and create pages, work with content and components, manage assets and more – all scoped to your Sitecore permissions.
Before you start
- You need a SitecoreAI tenant, and at the time of writing the docs call for the Admin role in the SitecoreAI app
- An MCP client that supports remote HTTP servers with OAuth
- A non-production environment. I’ll come back to this.
Connecting it
The server endpoint at the time of writing:
https://edge-platform.sitecorecloud.io/mcp/marketer-mcp-prod
In Cursor, add it as a remote server in your mcp.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"sitecore-marketer": {
"url": "https://edge-platform.sitecorecloud.io/mcp/marketer-mcp-prod"
}
}
}
Hit Connect and the client kicks off the sign-in flow. You log in with your Sitecore account, grant access, and pick your organization and tenant. That last step matters – the tokens are scoped to the tenant you choose, so double check you’re pointing at the sandbox and not prod.
The exact steps differ a little for Claude Desktop, VS Code and Copilot Studio. The Sitecore docs walk through each one, so I won’t repeat them here.
Quick smoke test once you’re connected – switch to agent mode and ask:
List all available sites
If you get your sites back, you’re in.
What it’s actually good at
I spent a couple of evenings throwing real tasks at it. A few patterns stood out.
Reading is fantastic. “What components are on the /about page?” or “Which pages under /insights don’t have a meta description?” saves a ton of clicking around. This is the low-risk, high-value starting point.
Scaffolding content is great. “Create a landing page for the spring campaign using the same layout as /promo/fall” gets you 80% of the way to a page an author can finish. The authors I’ve shown it to get this immediately.
Bulk changes are where you slow down. It can update a lot of items. That’s exactly why you want a human looking at the plan before it executes.
Prompts that work well
Be specific about scope and ask for a plan first:
On the site "Corporate", find every page under /insights created in the last 30 days.
For each one, tell me the page name, the template, and whether the Summary field is empty.
Don't change anything yet.
Then, once you’ve checked the list:
For the pages where Summary is empty, draft a one-sentence summary from the page's
body content and show me the drafts. Wait for my approval before saving any of them.
That “don’t change anything yet” pattern is the single most useful habit I’ve picked up.
Guardrails before you roll this out
This is a powerful tool talking to your CMS with your credentials. A few things I’d put in place before handing it to a team:
- Start on a non-production environment. Let people get a feel for it where mistakes are free.
- Use least privilege. The AI can do whatever your account can do. Don’t hand everyone an admin login just so they can try the MCP.
- Plan, approve, execute. Make “show me the plan first” a team norm for anything that writes.
- Lean on workflow. If your content goes through workflow, AI-created changes do too. That’s a feature.
- Keep secrets out of prompts. Prompts and responses flow through whatever AI client you’re using. Treat it like any other third-party tool.
Where this is going
What has me excited isn’t really “chat with your CMS”. It’s that the same tools are available to Marketplace apps through the Agent API. That means we can build purpose-built, guard-railed agent experiences inside SitecoreAI – a “fix my SEO metadata” app that can only touch SEO fields, say. That’s next on my list.
